Tim Blake Nelson Talks About New Film & His Role in the Marvel Universe at Tribeca 2024
by Jason Godbey
[New York, NY- June 11, 2024] On Tuesday evening at the SVA Theater in Manhattan, the new character-driven drama, Bang Bang made its World Premiere at the Tribeca Festival. Directed by Vincent Grashaw, the film stars Tim Blake Nelson ( Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Watchmen) as Bernard Rozyski, aka “Bang Bang,” a beloved boxer who had success in the 1980s. Bang Bang’s life gets turned upside down when his estranged daughter drops her teenage son (Andrew Liner) on his doorstep. No Rest for the Weekend was on the red carpet to speak with the director and cast.
The film also stars Erica Gimpel ( The Night Agent), a cancer survivor and Bang Bang’s high school sweetheart, and Glenn Plummer ( The Block Trilogies) as a character the actor describes as Bang Bang’s “nemesis.” Andrew Liner plays Justin, Bang Bang’s grandson, a young and up-and-coming boxer who struggles to find himself with the help of his grandfather.
Nelson was attracted to the project by what he describes as a “beautifully written script,” by Will Janowitz, and an “incredibly challenging role.” When asked about his upcoming role in the Marvel Universe (Nelson is set to reprise his role as Samuel Sterns aka “The Leader” in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World) he said, “I’m really excited about what Marvel has come up with for this character… The team at Marvel making this movie… they’ve treated the character really well, and I’m just glad that they’ve brought be back… I think people are going to be pretty excited about what we’re up to…”
When asked if his character would be the “Big Bad” in the upcoming feature, he replied coyly, “I… uh… don’t know if I’m allowed to say, but I definitely have a presence in the movie. I’ll put it that way. You won’t be able to miss Samuel Sterns.”
