The Uninvited is the first narrative film by Nadia Conners, who co-directed and co-wrote the environmental documentary, The 11th Hour, with Leonardo DiCaprio. The Uninvited which made its debut at SXSW. stars Pedro Pascal, Elizabeth Reaser, Walton Goggins, Lois Smith, and Rufus Sewell.

The relationship drama takes place over the course of one night during a Hollywood party at Rose (Elizabeth Reaser) and Sammy’s (Walton Goggins) house. Before the party even begins, a confused elderly woman, Helen (Lois Smith), appears, thinking she’s arrived home. The uninvited guest causes the characters to reflect on the course their lives have taken, their significance in them, and the truth of their relationships.

It’s no surprise that watching this film feels like watching a play. During the Q&A after the feature, Conners mentioned she had originally started writing script for the stage, but then COVID happened, and she had to think of another way to reach audiences.

The film flows beautifully, and the performances are outstanding. Humor is interwoven throughout, perfectly integrated with the drama. Lois Smith is definitely the standout. Her portrayal of Helen evokes chills, conveying so much emotion even when not speaking.

With all of the roles women are asked to take on, they can still feel like they are disappearing. The Uninvited touches on uncomfortable truths about aging, motherhood, and feeling lost and alone even when surrounded by people. It’s about the lifelong struggle for self-knowledge and self-acceptance.

If you enjoy character driven dramas and witnessing the intimate and vulnerable moments between people , you will love The Uninvited.

The Uninvited will be available on-demand in late November.
