This release comes to us from Level 33 Entertainment.
The Synopsis: After the death of his wife, Ben Grady (Grant Rosenmeyer) stumbles upon a self-help book by an enigmatic guru named “Mealworm” (Paul Raci), who claims to have harnessed the power to fly. The book arrives…and so does Mealworm, forcing Ben to navigate his family life, accusations of foul play, and the bizarre rituals laid before him in the hopes of healing and, just maybe, achieving flight. In the wake of a tragedy, a grieving widower turns to a mysterious self-help book from the dark web written by an eccentric guru, which promises to unlock the power to fly.
The Credits: Directed by H.P. Mendoza ( Fruit Fly, I Am a Ghost), written by Jesse Orenshein ( American Ninja Warrior) and starring Grant Rosenmeyer ( Come As You Are, The Royal Tenenbaums), Academy Award® Nominee Paul Raci ( Sound of Metal, This is Me… Now, Perry Mason), Lucy DeVito ( It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Deadbeat, Leaves of Grass), Nican Robinson ( Ahsoka, 13 Reasons Why, Heist 88).
I had the opportunity to see the The Secret Art of Human Flight and found it to be surprisingly touching. It’s a film that is carried by the strong performances from Grant Rosenmeyer and company. It feels like an indie from the 90s with profoundly human themes of loss and self-discovery. It’s a character-driven drama, the kind we don’t see much of anymore in cinemas today. It’s certainly not a film for everyone, but if you’re open to the experience, you just might fly.
