Kayla Vera interviews the cast of Somewhere in Queens on the red carpet.

Last night Somewhere in Queens premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center in Manhattan. No Rest for the Weekend’s Kayla Vera was on the red carpet to talk with the cast about the making of the film and what it meant to be at New York’s most prestigious film festival.

In Somewhere in Queens, two overbearing Italian-American parents played by Ray Romano and Laurie Metcalf struggle when their son (Jacob Ward) emerges as a high school basketball star. When asked about the film’s central message, Romano had this to say, “We all go through the same struggles. No matter where you’re from, no matter what traditions you have, no matter what kind of family you have, no matter how old you are, everybody has a struggle to overcome. And you’re not alone. You get help from your family. You get help from your friends, but you can all get through it. That’s kind of the overall theme of it, I think.”

Romano, who co-wrote the film and makes his directorial debut, expressed the fear and joy of bringing this personal story to life, “It was nerve-wracking. frightening… Every adjective for scary… and then when I finally got into it, it actually became fun… It was a dream come true… as scary as it was, I’d do it all over again.”

Somewhere in Queens is currently screening at the Tribeca Film Festival. For more information on showtimes, visit the festival website.
