SEEDS at Woodstock Film Festival
by Jackie Hazl, MADE with Jackie Hanzl
S eeds is a horror/comedy written, directed, and starring Kaniehtiio Horn ( Alice, Darling, Reservation Dogs). The film premiered in the Discovery program at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
Kaniehtiio plays Ziggy, a Toronto-based social media influencer who signs a contract with a major fertilizer company. However, things take a disturbing turn after she returns to the indigenous community where she grew up to house-sit. She embarks on a battle for survival when her new client’s horrific plans to destroy the environment and hurt her loved ones are soon uncovered.
Seeds is a dark, but also funny thriller. There is a genuine indie feel to this film. Horn’s portrayal of Ziggy is real and raw. She’s tough, loyal to her people, and an overall badass. During the Q&A at Woodstock Film Festival, Kaniehtiio said was inspired by Home Alone, and loved Shaun of the Dead. She hadn’t intended for it to be political or cultural, but it is, and the combination is perfect.
If you’re looking to get a little creeped out, laugh at some dark humor, enjoy a bit of gore, and get a glimpse of what an indigenous community is like, I highly recommend Seeds.
