Reel Works Honors Kenan Thompson, Walter T. Geer III, and STARZ at 24th Annual ChangeMakers Gala Celebrating Inclusive Storytelling
On Wednesday, May 21st, Reel Works hosted its highly anticipated annual 24th ChangeMakers Gala, honoring industry leaders who are transforming the landscape of entertainment through equity, representation, and bold storytelling. This year’s event brought together an inspiring community of creatives, advocates, and supporters, all united around a shared mission: to empower the next generation of diverse storytellers.
Kenan Thompson, celebrated comedian and the longest-tenured cast member in Saturday Night Live history, was honored with the ChangeMaker Award for his decades-long dedication to inclusive entertainment. From his breakout roles on All That and Kenan & Kel to becoming a cultural mainstay on SNL, Thompson has paved the way for underrepresented talent while redefining longevity and impact in Hollywood.
Walter T. Geer III, Chief Creative Officer of Innovation North America at VML, was also recognized with the ChangeMaker Award for his groundbreaking contributions to advertising. A passionate advocate for justice and inclusion, Geer has led transformative campaigns that not only shift industry standards but amplify the voices of marginalized communities. His work continues to reimagine creativity as a force for cultural and systemic change.
STARZ was honored for its trailblazing #TakeTheLead initiative, which has set a new standard for inclusive storytelling in television and film. Accepting the award on behalf of STARZ was Jamila Daniel, Chief Diversity Officer and EVP of Human Resources, introduced by actor Tristan Mack Wilds, currently starring in Both Eyes Open. The initiative stands as a model for prioritizing equity behind and in front of the camera.
The evening was hosted by Saturday Night Live ‘s Ego Nwodim, whose signature blend of humor and authenticity guided the celebration with warmth and purpose.
The 2025 Gala was Reel Works’ most successful to date, raising over $320,000 to support its mission. Highlights of the night included a spirited auction, where two pairs of Saturday Night Live tickets sold for $16,000 each. Kenan Thompson, further demonstrating his commitment to Reel Works, placed winning bids on luxury trips to Mexico and Italy, helping push the evening’s fundraising to record-breaking heights.

Founded in 2001, Reel Works empowers over 1,600 New York City youth annually through free filmmaking programs and one-on-one mentorship. With a mission to build a more equitable media industry, Reel Works connects emerging storytellers with industry professionals and career pathways. Impressively, 100% of participating students graduate from high school, 83% attend college, and over half launch careers in media.
