NewFest & BAM Reveal Lineup for 5th Annual Retrospective Screening Series “QUEERING THE CANON: SO OBSESSED”

This year’s tantalizing, decades-spanning collection of films will take place in-person in New York at BAM with select filmmaker Q&As, as well as virtually nationwide Highlights include the New York Premiere of the 4K Restoration of Lisa Cholodenko’s HIGH ART (1998), featuring Q&A with Cholodenko, and a rare screening of Cheryl Dunye’s STRANGER INSIDE (2001), followed by a Q&A with Dunye
[NEW YORK, NY — March 6, 2025] NewFest, New York’s leading LGBTQ+ film and media organization and host to one of the world’s most respected LGBTQ+ film festivals, and BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) have announced the full line-up for the fifth edition of their annual retrospective screening series “Queering the Canon: So Obsessed”.
Prepare to have curiosities become full blown obsessions with this captivating retrospective of queer films and filmmakers. Mesmerizing tales of the all-consuming power of romance, art, family, and self-indulgence — from shared spaces to a woman’s prison to apartment buildings — will preoccupy audiences’ minds.
Prior editions of “Queering the Canon” have included “Besties”, “BIPOC New York”, “Queer Rom-Coms”, and “Totally Radical.” This year’s “Queering the Canon: So Obsessed” includes the New York Premiere of Lisa Cholodenko’s award-winning film HIGH ART, restored in 4K, starring Radha Mitchell, Ally Sheedy, Patricia Clarkson, Gabriel Mann, Bill Sage, Charis Michelsen, David Thornton, Anh Duong, and Helen Mendes. An in-person Q&A with writer/director Lisa Cholodenko will immediately follow the screening on Thursday, April 3.
Additionally, a free rare screening of STRANGER INSIDE, directed by Cheryl Dunye, will be held on Friday, April 4 and will be followed by an in-person Q&A with Dunye. Other highlights include the 35mm screening of Barbet Schroeder’s SINGLE WHITE FEMALE, and restorations of Tsai Ming-Liang’s Golden Lion-winning VIVE L’AMOUR and the 1971 underground sensation PINK NARCISSUS. Virtual Exclusives include 2000’s CHUCK & BUCK (celebrating its 25th anniversary) and John Maybury’s 1998 film, LOVE IS THE DEVIL: STUDY FOR A PORTRAIT OF FRANCIS BACON.
