Movie Reviews from Mill Valley and New York Film Festivals
Hosted by Jason Godbey
On this episode William J. Hammon ( ActuallyPaid.com) and I review some of the films from this year’s Mill Valley Film Festival and New York Film Festival including: Anora, Saturday Night, and Zurawski v. Texas.
This time of year at film festival season is when we start seeing movies that will be vying for awards come next year. Anora premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and won the coveted Palme D’or. Critics and fans alike seem to love it with a 99% critics score and an 89% audience score according to Rotten Tomatoes. Could it be that this film is filling a need for audiences? Director Sean Baker has spoken about the lack of films for adults in cinemas, and audiences seem to agree with him.
Saturday Night is the tale of the events leading up to the premiere of Saturday Night Live. It’s directed by Jason Reitman who recently resurrected the Ghostbusters franchise with Ghostbusters: Afterlife. One of the stars of Saturday Night is Catherine Curtin who has appeared on No Rest for the Weekend multiple times. She also appears in our recent documentary, We’re Ready to Believe You: Ghostbusters 40th Anniversary which is currently making its way around the festival circuit. You can watch are interview with her on YouTube.
Zurawski v. Texas is a powerful documentary about the polarizing subject of abortion and women’s rights. For a case that happened just this year, this film has finished in record time compared to most documentaries which is not an accident considering it’s an election year. It won’t be easy to watch for some, but films like this can be vitally important in changing the way we think and feel about sensitive topics like abortion and may change the way some people vote next month.
