Last night at the Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angles, CA, a shocked Fernanda Torres accepted the award for Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture beating out some household names: Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, and Pamela Anderson. Torres won the award 25 years after her mother, Fernanda Montenegro was nominated in the same category for Central Station in 1999.
Here’s what you need to know about the movie: It’s 1971 and Brazil faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship. Eunice Paiva (Fernada Torres), a mother of five children is forced to reinvent herself after her family suffers a violent and arbitrary act by the government.
The film is based on Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s biographical book and tells the true story that helped reconstruct an important part of Brazil’s hidden history.
