On Friday June 7th, the new series from Hulu, Mastermind: To Think Like A Killer premiered at the SVA Theater in Manhattan. The red carpet premiere featured appearances from director Abigail Fuller, executive producer Dakota Fanning, and series’ subject, Dr. Ann Burgess (pictured above).

When asked about the project, director Fuller said, “Dr. Burgess’ story has never been told before. Criminal profiling is something that has really become part of our social consciousness, definitely in terms of the entertainment we see. But the woman who’s actually the mastermind, who actually developed profiling, has never told her story before mostly because she’s a woman, and this happened in the 70s and 80s… You can imagine why she never really got the credit that she deserves, so we’re gonna set the record straight and share her story now.”

Dakota Fanning who exec produced the series with her sister Elle Fanning spoke about why she wanted to be involved with the project. “When I made The Alienist, I was thinking about the beginning of profiling… It’s a space that I’ve always been interested in, and I love true crime. I love studying behavior, and so knowing about Dr. Burgess and being approached to partner on this project was so exciting because she’s responsible for so many things that are still being used today.”

Dr. Ann Burgess, psychiatric nurse and professor who was one of the inventors of the techniques used to capture some of history’s most infamous serial killers had this to say about having her story told for the first time, “It was very gratifying to have it done. We often don’t get that opportunity, certainly those of us in nursing, so I really felt it was an honor to be able to get the story out. And it’s been useful, certainly has had a lot of critics, but it’s but been very useful. So let’s hope that it moves the field forward.”

Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer is set to premiere on Hulu on July 11th.
