In this video, directors Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom talk about their latest documentary, Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill, which features interviews with David Geffen, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, JD Souther, Shawn Colvin, Weyes Blood, Big Thief, Fleet Foxes and more.

Criminal, addict, poet, genius, musical prodigy, artist, forgotten legend, all these words can be used to describe singer-songwriter Judee Sill, but who was she really? That’s the central question of Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill.

For many, this film will be an introduction to Judee Sill and her music. It was for me. Directors Andy Brown and Brian Lindstrom capture the essence of Judee Sill herself through letters, journal entries, archival interviews and photographs. The interview subjects give their honest accounts of their relationships with Sill. The narrative is illustrated by clever animations that mimic Sill’s own journal sketches all to the soundtrack of her music.

Creating an accurate portrait of someone through film is no easy task. People are complex beings who cannot be distilled into a tight 90 minutes. Lost Angel took the filmmakers a decade to make, and one can feel the love and care they put into it. It’s a loving portrait of Judee Sill, but it doesn’t shy away from showing the messier parts of her life and personality. We hear about the abuse she suffered as a child and her battles with addiction in her own words.

As difficult as it can be to watch, Lost Angel is also inspiring. Sill’s genius as a songwriter and performer is at the forefront. The woman and her work are presented as equals. The documentary is as much about her work as it is about her life. For the first time, many audiences will get to hear her songs and dive into the meaning behind them.

If you’re a fan of Judee Sill or a fan of the rockumentary genre, this is definitely a must-see. Lost Angel: The Legend of Judee Sill is set to be released in select theaters and VOD on April 12th.
