KISS THE FUTURE Director Nenad Cincin-Sain
By Jason Godbey
On this episode, director Nenad Cincin-Sain talks about Kiss the Future, “the critically acclaimed documentary about the creative community amid the siege of Sarajevo, and the resilience of its people through art, and the tale of a post-war concert by U2.” Produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, Kiss the Future opened last year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
Kiss the Future is a powerful film. It’s a story of hope and the power of art in the face of adversary. It’s a cautionary tale about one man’s quest for power and what happens when power goes unchecked. It’s a well-rounded film with interviews that range from the musicians and artists who created the underground art scene during the war to President Bill Clinton and the members of U2.
It’s the story of the siege of Sarajevo, but it’s more than a history lesson. It’s largely made up of personal accounts of the people who lived there and fought there and the people who tried to help and bring hope to a seemingly hopeless situation. When I asked director Cincin-Sain about the film he said “It’s about the power of music. It’s about people finding the light in the darkness, but the darkness comes from the cautionary tale of what happened there… If we don’t protect our democracy and maintain civility and an ability to find common ground with those we see as an enemy at times, it’s very dangerous where society can go as we’re witnessing around the world repeatedly today.”
