Academy Award Nominated Colman Domingo in conversation on Saturday, October 12 following the award presentation.

[NEW YORK, NY — October 8, 2024] NewFest’s Executive Director David Hatkoff and Director of Programming Nick McCarthy announced today that Colman Domingo will be honored with the NewFest36 Voice & Visibility Award during this year’s New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival. Individuals awarded this honor are recognized for exceptionally demonstrating NewFest’s mission to give voice and visibility to LGBTQ+ stories and artists. Recipients have played an active and essential role in empowering and advancing the LGBTQ+ community in the media. The award presentation will take place on Saturday, October 12 at 4pm at the SVA Theatre, with a conversation between Colman Domingo and Chris Murphy of Vanity Fair to immediately follow.

“Colman Domingo’s Academy Award-nominated performance as queer trailblazer Bayard Rustin in Rustin, the opening night film of NewFest’s 2023 festival, was one for the ages,” said NewFest Executive Director David Hatkoff. “His work in television, film, and theater has resonated with LGBTQ+ audiences for more than 20 years, and he has channeled his infectious personality to bring voice and visibility to queer communities of color and the LGBTQ+ experience overall. We are delighted to present him with this award and host him in conversation at The 36th Annual New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival.”

A NewFest alumnus, Colman Domingo has had a prolific career on the stage and screen, helping propel LGBTQ+ artists and stories in the mainstream media. His portrayal of Bayard Rustin in the acclaimed film, Rustin, which premiered at NewFest35 last year, earned him Oscar, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations. Most recently Domingo starred in and executive produced Greg Kwedar’s Sing Sing, which was released by A24 this past summer. Domingo has also appeared as Ali in the acclaimed HBO series Euphoria, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award, as well the limited series The Madness, which will be available on Netflix November 28th. Beyond film and television, Colman Domingo has appeared and written a number of plays and musicals. He was part of the producing team of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Fat Ham, for which was nominated for a Tony Award, as well as co-wrote the Tony Award nominated Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.

The 36th Annual New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival will run October 10–22 in-person throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, and streaming virtually throughout the United States. Programming highlights include the East Coast Premiere of A Nice Indian Boy , starring Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff; Emilia Perez , starring Karla Sofia Gascón, Zoe Saldana, and Selena Gomez; the NYC premiere of Bird, starring Barry Keoghan and Franz Rogowski; and the New York premiere of High Tide, starring Marco Pigossi. Special events include a conversation with activist and poet Alok Vaid-Menon, and an advance screening of the HBO Original Series Somebody Somewhere.
