CHASING CHASING AMY Premieres at Tribeca Film Festival
By Jason Godbey
The new documentary from director Sav Rodgers, Chasing Chasing Amy premiered last night as part of the Tribeca Film Festival. In the film, Rodgers goes on a journey of self-discovery while exploring his relationship to Kevin Smith’s film Chasing Amy, a film Rodgers says saved his life while growing up as a queer kid in Kansas.
We Interviewed Rodgers and his wife Riley both of whom are featured in the documentary were on the red carpet along with several members of the production team. When reacting to the excited crowd of onlookers in front of the AMC 19th Street in New York City, Rodgers remarked “This is surreal. Not in a million years did I imagine all of this… I had no idea what to expect… I’m just really stoked to share the movie with people.”
Carrie Radigan, a producer on the film, spoke about its impact, “I feel like making Chasing Chasing Amy was kind of my coming out story…. I’m someone who didn’t realize their own sexuality until their late 20s/early 30s and part of that was really making this film. And learning more… You know, that’s there’s more to it than just the binary, that there are sexualities that aren’t just gay or straight… And I can only hope that is just becomes helpful for other people who might be in similar shoes who watch the movie. That’s what it means to me personally.”
Perhaps the most poignant statement of the night came from Riley Rodgers, Sav’s wife and fellow subject of the documentary. “I just hope that this movie can let people know that there’s no one definition of love, that you make your own definition of what love is, and it doesn’t matter if people want to define it one way or another…. You love somebody in the way that you can and you want, and you do what works for you and your partner. Nothing else matters.”
