Chronicling and immortalizing life on film is the work of Martha Cooper, the subject of the documentary, Martha: A Picture Story. To look at her, Martha Cooper seems like any other woman in her 70s. She could be your mother or your grandmother, lovely and sweet. …

The term “elevated horror” has been met with some derision by genre fans, and understandably so. It implies a sense of superiority and pomposity that isn’t necessarily called for in horror. The company has made it a priority to select works that acknowledge genre conventions while at the same time offer a bolder, more challenging vision.
The latest A24 release, Saint Maud, is very indicative of this trend. The debut feature of writer-director Rose Glass is an intoxicating entry of the “religious horror” subgenre, joining the likes…

The most daring thrillers in modern cinema history are the ones that engage their audiences on real, visceral terms, presenting a story that may be over-the-top, but at its core has believable characters and doesn’t shy away from the harsh truths of the world. That’s what director John Balazs brings to the table with the Australian neo-noir, Rage. …

Stop me if you’re heard this one. There’s a serial killer preying on the women of Los Angeles. There’s a young, ambitious detective whose star is on the rise in the department in pursuit. There’s an older burnt out cop out to solve the case that’s been haunting him his whole career. If you’re saying “I think I’ve seen this movie,” it’s probably because you have in one form or another.
The story is simple. It’s 1990, and Joe “Deke” Deacon (Denzel Washington) is a former hot shot detective who…
