The Tonkawa Film Festival held its 4th edition of the festival this past weekend with a record number of filmmakers in attendance from across the United States and from as far away as Australia. In addition to the 35 films screened at Wilkin Hall on the Northern Oklahoma College campus, the festival once again featured their one-of-a-kind film festival parade through downtown Tonkawa. The parade featured visiting filmmakers as well as adding a competition for Best Film themed costumes, floats and vehicles. Winners were awarded part of the $1000 donated by First National Bank of Oklahoma in Tonkawa. This year’s parade also included a special appearance by Lt. Governor, Matt Pinnell who met with visiting filmmakers following the parade to highlight the benefits of filming Oklahoma.

Category awards were handed out on Saturday, April 15th following the screenings, as well as a Best of Fest award which included a $500 cash prize. The award for Best Animation went to Midas, directed by Ben Meyer. Lunacode: The Light took home the award for Best Music Video. The Best International Film was No Witnesses, and the best Native American Film was She Carries On. Okefenokee Destiny was awarded Best Documentary, and the Best Student Film award went to Like Us.

Other award winners included: Amelia’s Prayer for Best Family Film, In the Dark for Best Horror Film, Beware the Goat for Best Comedy, and the winner of the Best Drama award and Best in Fest was Albacore, directed by Nick Everhart.

Submissions for next year’s festival are already open. For more information, check out our interview with the festival’s founder, James Oxford and visit the festival website.
